Research undertaking includes conducting projects on yam breeding to develop highly productive yam varieties, adapted to different agro-ecozones of sub-Saharan Africa; using innovative approaches for the exploitation of genetic diversity and genomic data; integrating conventional yam breeding and using high-quality research in breeding for resistance to biotic and tolerance to abiotic, and end-use quality traits. The approach to the research is on conventional and participatory plant breeding with value chain actors, using a production system approach, which integrates biophysical and socioeconomic components of yam production. Assists in supervision of several projects in yam improvement in CSIR-SARI include Yam Improvement for Income and Food Security in West Africa (YIIFSWA), Increasing Productivity and Utilization of Food Yams in Africa (IPUFYA) and Africa Yam projects in Ghana with sponsorship from Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and in various collaborative initiatives with International Institute for Tropical Agriculture (IITA), National Agricultural Research Stations (NARS), Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MoFA) and private-sector organizations.
